The heart undergoes a unique combination of morphological and physiological changes to reach an anatomical maturity while maintaining the circulatory needs of the developing embryo. The cardiac functional development in early pregnancy is not well know so,ĭoppler techniques is able to study early human fetal cardiac function indirectly, and it have made it possible to examine the human fetal heart and vessel non invasively and to determine normal and abnormal cardiovascular in early phases of pregnancy ( 11). The cardiac flow velocities are influenced by preload, contractile function, afterload and heart rate. Not surprisingly, ventricular loading is affected by the maturation of structures such as the placenta and changes in the impedance of the cerebral and placental vascular beds in response to hypoxaemia, as well as circulatory adaptations made by the fetus in response to intracardiac malformations ( 10). Hence the fetal right ventricle pumps against the systemic pressures of the lower fetal body and placental impedance, while the left ventricle ejects against the relatively high impedance of the fetal brain and upper body. The right ventricle fills from mostly upper body systemic venous return and the majority of its output is diverted away from the pulmonary circulation, via the arterial duct, to the descending aorta and thence to the placenta via the umbilical arteries. Left ventricular filling depends predominantly on patency of the oval foramen to allow the relatively oxygen-rich blood returning from the placental circulation, via the umbilical vein and venous duct, to stream through the right atrium and enter the left side of the heart ( 9). Pulmonary venous return contributes only a small proportion to left ventricular preload because of the relatively low pulmonary blood flow in fetal life ( 8). Three important communications exist between the two circulations (oval foramen and the arterial and venous ducts) that influence loading conditions. The fetal circulation works in parallel with the dominant right ventricle, ejecting approximately 60% of the combined ventricular output. The initial elevation of the HR coincides with the morphological development of the heart, and the subsequent decline can result from the functional maturation of the parasympathetic nervous system ( 7). From then on, there is a gradual reduction in the HR that reaches a mean value of 150 bpm at the 13th week of gestation. It is well documented in the literature that, in healthy fetuses, the heart rate (HR) increases from 110 bpm at the 5th week of gestation to 170 bpm at the 9th week of gestation. The heart, whose development starts at the 3rd week of gestation, has rapid and irregular contractions capable of pumping the blood inside the vessels.Īt this period, the developing circulatory system allows maternal- embryonic nutritive and gaseous changes at the chorionic villi. Both circulations can be altered by changes at the placental, cardiac, central nervous system, and peripheric levels.Īt the end of the 4th week of gestation, the heartbeats of the embryo begin. Two types of circulation unite these organs: on one side, the venous circulation, and on the other, the arterial circulation. Heart and placenta are the main organs determining fetal hemodynamics. Cardiac function is the first sign of independent cardiac activity that can be explored with non-invasive techniques such as Doppler ultrasound ( 5). Cardiovascular development in a human embryo occurs between 3 and 6 weeks after ovulation. Finally at 14th gestational weeks there isn’t any different between these two different approaches ( 6). Smrcek et al have demostrated that at 10th-13rd gestational week transvaginal echocardiography can better show the anatomic heart details, whereas afther the 15th gestational week the transabdominal method is more usefull. Many studies have valuated the efficacies of early echocardiography and have compared these two different methods: tv and transabdominal. Echocardiographic and anatomical correlations in firsttrimester fetuses show that by 11 weeks’ gestation, the position of the fetal heart within the chest is similar to that in later gestation, and the spatial relation of the great arteries and their relative sizes are similar to those on second- trimester scans by 12 weeks’ gestation ( 5). Trade Lifecycle Management: A Major Time-SaverĪnother facet of the investment management process that causes headaches for advisors is trade lifecycle management. But it is imperative that you as the advisor work with a firm that is truly independent so you are confident that your clients are getting the absolute best services and products. Outsourcing is a top trend for independent RIAs right now, and we believe that trend will continue in the years ahead. Consider Halo to be the trusted advisor for advisors. We have subject matter experts on hand to work in the best interests of you and your clients. Compared to our competitors, Halo is unique in that we are our own broker-dealer when it comes to annuity offerings. You can leave the nitty-gritty of protective investing evaluation to Halo while you connect with your clients.Ī key feature of working with Halo comes through our OID. Today’s advisor should focus on relationship management and less on knowing every last detail of an investment product. But don’t take our word for it: a recent RIA Intel article underscores the prevailing trend of RIAs leveraging niche service providers. Outsourcing can also save you time and energy. You can deepen your practice using Halo’s specialized tools and knowledge. Don’t just react to the market-define the future for your clients and your practice. Our platform gives financial advisors flexible access to protective investments so you can give your clients the products and solutions they need to reach their financial objectives. Breakaway RIAs working with Halo can differentiate themselves and market to prospective clients much more effectively, as opposed to simply pitching the usual stock and bond fund portfolios. The upshot for independent advisors? You have the opportunity to offer clients a better choice using defined-outcome and protective investments through Halo. Just look at the latest capital market projections from firms like AQR and Vanguard Group: the typical 60/40 portfolio is forecast to endure historically weak total returns in the coming decade, and inflation will take an even bigger bite out of the 60/40. Today’s markets demand innovative solutions and creative strategies. This is a critical advantage for breakaway RIAs when doing business with Halo. It is our goal to work in your best interests. While other companies are entities of large banks (which can influence the products and services they offer), Halo is independent. Halo stands out from our competitors, and our goal is to help breakaway RIAs stand out from the crowd, too. Thirdly, as an Outsourced Insurance Desk (OID), you as the advisor can more efficiently purchase and manage annuities through Halo without the burden of additional professional licensing. Secondly, Halo offers advisors defined-outcome and buffered ETFs. Halo Investing’s competitive and transparent marketplace offers structured notes at a fair price. To reclaim some of this time and focus on higher value-add activities, outsourcing certain activities presents an ideal way to leverage others’ specialized knowledge and capabilities.ĭefined outcome strategies and protective investments help separate you from other advisors, especially those at the big broker-dealers who can only offer cookie-cutter portfolios. We see this in the rise of investment platforms (especially alternative investments) and, in the case of Halo’s platform, protective investments, as well as numerous recently announced strategic ventures. To drive efficiency, advisors are increasingly turning to outsourced services for a variety of investment and administrative functions. Investment management is a key facet of financial planning, and today’s environment of ultra-low bond yields and very high stock market valuations might have you wondering what you can do to better your clients’ financial prospects. Advisors are increasingly working with financial partners to move away from the rat-race of chasing returns and gravitating to relationships that can help generate unique and nuanced ways to preserve and enhance accumulated financial gains.Īs a breakaway RIA, you want to differentiate yourself from the herd. The growing demand for advisor independence is just one leg of a secular rotation away from conventional schools of thought and tools of money management. Most notably the flexibility provided when considering marketing, branding, financial products, and technologies. “She remembered me and was shocked that I had come back.” Three months later she did go back and connected with the same UNICEF-supported NGO and saw that grandmother again. She looked at me like ‘yeah right’,” Compton-Rock said. As gogos we need to make money for our children so they can go to school and have a better life than we do.’ I told her I’d find ways to help and would come back. “I was taken aback and asked what she wanted me to do and she said, ‘I’m really tired of people coming and looking and taking pictures and leaving but not doing anything. “She said, ‘What are you gonna do about this?’” Compton-Rock recalls. It was where she met an elderly grandmother who asked her a question that has kept her going back to the country over 30 times. She wanted to see some of the issues affecting black people post-Apartheid.Īn old UNICEF boss linked her with a local non-governmental organization that took her on a tour of Diepsloot, a township in the north of Johannesburg, where she was met with dire poverty and devastation among the many grandparent- and orphan-led homes, a result of the country’s high number of AIDS-related deaths of young and middle-aged parents. Towards the end of that first trip, Compton-Rock, who had previously worked in public relations for the United Nations Children’s Fund, needed to touch base with her development work roots. They did the typical tourist activities – safaris, museum tours, took in the Johannesburg culture and scenic drives along Cape Town’s garden route. An irony of "Yusra" is that the title character finds community in Hamtramck, where the Muslim-majority city council recently banned Pride flags from being displayed on city property. "He feels so torn because he can't really embody Yusra among his family and friends but in Hamtramck, where he's a stranger, he can roam free."Īs in many of Zeineddine's stories, the character builds surprising, tender alliances and chooses idiosyncratic paths that exceed easy stereotypes. "He's a genderqueer butcher," Zeineddine explains, adding that his character Yasser has radically compartmentalized his life and, as an immigrant of a certain age from a socially conservative background, would likely not apply the word "genderqueer" to himself. I spot a pack of niqabis across the street, and I almost wave to them like we're all friends and haven't seen each other in months. I hear Polish folk once ran this city within a city, but now Yemenis and Bangladeshis have taken over with all the grocery stores, restaurants and mosques. My wife and son would never trek this far in Detroit, nor would my buddies. I remind myself I'm miles away from my Lebanese neighborhood in East Dearborn. Though I'm of average height, my massive chest and big biceps make me stand out. Despite my getup, I worry someone might recognize the way I walk, tilting from side to side like a juiced-up bodybuilder. I wear a niqab, leaving only a slit for my eyes, and an abaya. It's July and I'm walking down Caniff Street in Hamtramck, covered from head to tow in black. Their jobs range from a DJ to a gas station owner to a halal butcher, who we meet on a walk on a hot southeast Michigan summer day. Zeineddine's short stories are based in an Arab American community more than a hundred years old, filled with hard-dreaming immigrants who came to work in Detroit's auto plants and practice across a broad swath of faiths: Catholics, Coptics, Sunnis, Shias, Sufis, Druze and more. I kept telling my wife, we made the right decision to come here. "I had never seen that before in America. "When my wife and I drove to Dearborn to buy a house, we saw all these Arab families," he remembers. He lived in Dearborn for three years, when he taught at the local campus of the University of Michigan. Zeineddine, who's Lebanese-American, has a shyly upbeat air and the slightly bulky physique of a former high school wrestler. It's right by a Palestinian falafel shop, an Iraqi restaurant and a Lebanese boutique, as well as Arab-owned hair salons and pharmacies. Now a creative writing professor at Oberlin College, Zeineddine drove to Dearborn recently to meet a reporter at a popular Yemeni café over a cup of organic Mofawar coffee made with cardamom and cream. It's where author Ghassan Zeineddine set his debut collection of short stories, Dearborn. Austin Thomason | UM Photographyĭearborn, just west of Detroit, Mich., is a city often estimated to be at least half Arab American, with a general population of about 108,000. Listen Ghassan Zeineddine, author of the short story collection, Dearborn. I also used this slightly thicker concrete on the tile backsplash and applied it with a thin putty knife. This worked best because the concrete had set up a little bit, so it was easier to mold and cling to the vertical surface. You want to make sure everything is very dry so it adheres well to the counter and doesn’t crack.Īfter spreading each layer on the top surface of the counters with the taping knife, I pressed the leftover concrete onto the front edge of the counters. If you are attempting this, err on the side of caution to start and give yourself a little extra time between coats. Each layer took between 45 minutes and two hours to dry. I used a hair dryer on the first couple of coats to help dry some stubborn grout lines that were drying slowly. You want to gradually build up a solid surface, so the first couple of layers were lightly skimmed to fill in all the low spots. The first layer will have some bare tile spots showing, so don’t try to put this layer on too thick. In addition to the grout indents, some of the tiles were set up a little higher than the surrounding ones, so there was a lot of space to fill in. The first million layers are just filling in all the grout lines and trying to build up the counter surface to be smooth. This is where using feather finish concrete over tile counters differs from applying it over a smooth surface. Then I slopped a bunch of it onto the counters and got to work spreading it out with a ten-inch flat taping knife. I sliced open my hand carelessly hacking away at the floors, so I was wearing a glove to protect my open wound.įollowing the advice of everyone on the internet, I mixed up my concrete to a pancake batter consistency using wood paint stirrers and cheap buckets from Home Depot. But if you care about your floors, you should put down a tarp or some plastic to protect them. I was in the process of ripping out all of that green and white plaid flooring, so I wasn’t worried about dripping on that. Then I taped trash bags over the cabinet doors to protect them from any drips. Of course, I had washed them since I moved in, but they never looked truly clean. I tried to wash all the counters to remove all the decades of grime, but this was impossible because the white tile and grout were DISGUSTING. I couldn’t find anything about applying feather finish concrete over tile counters anywhere, so I improvised! A lot of the tutorials online call for Ardex Feather Finish, but I went with Henry’s from Home Depot since they had it in stock (I’m pretty sure it is the same product with a different name) and I was too excited to wait for something to ship. (You know how easily I get obsessed with stuff, right?) I loved the look of the feather finish countertops that John and Sherry did in their temporary kitchen over on YHL, and after reading that I fell into a research spiral soaking up every bit of feather finish concrete knowledge I could find. Read more for the full rundown of how to apply feather finish concrete over tile counters. Since I was already working with industrial exposed rafters, going with an industrial look concrete counter felt like a good option here, and I love any reason to DIY something. I truly don’t know why anyone would choose to have mosaic tile countertops the grout is impossible to keep clean and whoever installed mine didn’t do a good job with the transition from the flat surface of the counters to the front edge. I lived with these gross, one-inch white tile countertops for over a year before I got around to attempting a DIY feather finish concrete counter. This is one of those projects that had such a HUGE impact that I wish I had done it right when I moved in. |
